The journey, it’s up and downs and the break through. From experience, D-Black believes the journey of music in Ghana is a struggle even though you could gain the various recognition both in the media and from Award Firms.
During One On One interview with Dj Advisor on Happy Chartroom , D-Black disclosed how tough it was when he started music in 2011. According to him, even after releasing his first ever Album “Finally Finally” which had a lot of recognition both at the VGMA’s and BETs he was still broke since the Music Industry in Ghana was not paying. He added on that, Hip hop as genre those days was not supported much and to even talk of shows. According to him, he believes and knows many lime light artistes in Ghana who are still broke.
Musicians will be famous and still broke because Music Industry In Ghana is not supported by Governments unlike other countries like our right rivalry competitors, Nigeria, he added
According to D-Black, after going to the BETs and touring other countries for Awards he was norminated for, he still remained poor until later in 2013 where he was about to release his 3rd Studio Album where he had the chance to travel with Reggie Rockstone to South Africa for a shot.
He said, after hip hop was not working, he tried hip life and other genres including highlife and was sometimes using highlife and hiplife instrumentals for hip hop.
At South Africa, he was working on one of the instrumentals he had on his album where Reggie asked him, “Why won’t you let Sarkodie write a twi song for you?”
He said no because, he can’t sing it when others write for him. Reggie again suggested why won’t he try to put some pigeon. So he later on changed the verse which he had already written in English to pigeon. He showed it to him later after he was through with his shots and he said “the song is already a hit”.
According to D-Black, “Vera” and every word in there was a true story as his friend at S.H.S snatched his girl. Joey B who was a neighbour gave him a call later at night that he has heard him play a song and that he wants to be on it. Joey B was given the chance to to put his verse on it but with the condition that when he returns and the verse isn’t that good, he will take him off it. To his surprise, he came and Joey B has actually Killed the beat so he had to put him on. Production credit of Vera goes to Amadaa of Nshona Music.
The song Vera according to D-Black was not officially released but was put on facebook basing on the fact that he was not too cool using pigeon for it but to his surprise, it picked and was everywhere so he has to this time put it on platforms where he could monetize it and indisputably, the song has changed his life to the clothes he wears, cars he drives, food to eat and to taking care of his mum till now. And currently, he is among the few well to do musicians and entrepreneurs in Ghana and beyond.
